How a Safari Sparked an Aussie Photography Star

Back in July 2017, I was leading specialist photographic drives in Madikwe, minding my own business, when two Australians hopped onto my vehicle. Now, if you’ve spent any time around Aussies, you know they can be, let’s say, “particular.” But Sasha and Jo Rinkovec? They shattered the stereotype. That safari not only introduced me to incredible mates, but also marked the beginning of nine unforgettable years of friendship and adventures across Southern Africa.

From exploring the Kruger’s vastness to navigating the wild terrains of the Kalahari (or Kgalagadi, if you’re feeling fancy), Sarsha and I formed a bond over our shared love of photography and sarcastic conversational styles. Naturally, this partnership involved me reshaping his photographic thinking—not taking all the credit here, but he’s now a top Australian photographer who’s absolutely nailed the craft.

The Journey from Safari Novice to Photography Pro

When Sarsha first picked up a camera, let’s just say it was more point-and-shoot than National Geographic. He and Jo have traveled the world extensively and seen incredible things. But after countless trips to the Lowveld, early morning wildlife encounters, and some questionable jokes about Aussie slang, he started to see the world differently—through a lens, literally and figuratively. Today, he’s a incredible Wildlife Photographer. He is also obsessed with Namibia, boerewors rolls, milk tart and Aromat. (along with many other genres of photography)

But the real kicker? This bloke went all out to surprise me for my 50th birthday. Teaming up with Jo and Caroline, he showed up unannounced for a two-week Lowveld safari. Talk about commitment!

A Podcast Worth Clicking

To celebrate this incredible journey, Sarsha and I sat down for a podcast session. If you’re keen to hear about photography tips, safari adventures, and plenty of South African-Australian humor, click below. It’s 45 minutes of wild banter and wisdom.

Why This Matters to Budding Photographers
