A Five-Day Kruger Bird Photography Workshop in the Lowveld

Join Andrew Aveley and Mario Paul, founder of Wild Birding Africa, for a focused five-day Kruger bird photography workshop in the Lowveld.

Based in either White River or Marloth Park, this small-group workshop is designed for amateur and intermediate photographers who want to improve their bird photography through practical field experience, personal guidance and a better understanding of birds, behaviour and light.

This is not a general safari with a little birding added along the way. It is a bird photography workshop first.

The focus is on helping you understand your camera more clearly, recognise photographic opportunities, anticipate bird behaviour and create stronger images under real field conditions.

The aim is simple: for you to leave with greater confidence, a more practical approach to bird photography and a collection of images that reflects your progress during the workshop.

What Makes This Workshop Different?

This workshop is built around bird photography.

Mammals and other wildlife will certainly be appreciated when good photographic opportunities arise, but the workshop will not become a race between Big Five sightings. Birds, behaviour, habitat, light and photography remain the priority.

The maximum group size of five photographers allows for personal attention and flexible teaching. There is time to ask questions, work through camera settings, review images and discuss the challenges that arise in the field.

The workshop combines two important areas of knowledge:

Specialist bird identification, behaviour and habitat knowledge
Practical photography guidance focused on settings, light, timing and composition

Finding the bird is one part of the process. Turning that opportunity into a strong photograph is quite another, as many memory cards have quietly discovered.

Andrew and Mario are available throughout the workshop, not only during drives and structured sessions, but also during meals, image reviews and informal discussions.

This personal access and continued support are central to the workshop experience.

Your Workshop Hosts

Andrew Aveley

Andrew is a wildlife photographer, private guide and photography educator with more than two decades of experience photographing wildlife, birds and landscapes in Southern Africa.

His teaching approach is practical, patient and based on the realities of working in natural environments and from safari vehicles.

The focus is not only on camera settings. Participants are also encouraged to recognise good light, anticipate behaviour, choose better backgrounds and understand when patience is more effective than constantly moving in search of another subject.

Andrew explains photographic techniques in straightforward language and adapts his guidance to each participant’s experience, equipment and personal goals.

Mario Paul

Mario is the founder of Wild Birding Africa and brings specialist birding knowledge, local field experience and a strong understanding of bird behaviour, habitat and identification.

His knowledge helps participants understand why birds favour particular environments, what behaviour to watch for and how seasonal conditions can influence bird activity.

Together, Andrew and Mario provide a balanced combination of birding knowledge and photographic guidance.

You do not need to be an expert birder or professional photographer.

A willingness to learn, spend time observing birds and occasionally accept that the subject has landed behind the only untidy branch in the area will be more than enough.

Bird Photography in Kruger and the Lowveld

Kruger National Park and the surrounding Lowveld include a variety of habitats, from rivers, dams and bridges to open grassland, woodland and seasonal wetland areas.

These different habitats provide opportunities to work with a wide variety of subjects and photographic situations.

Depending on conditions, participants may have opportunities to photograph:

Birds in flight
Perched bird portraits
Birds feeding
Courtship and territorial behaviour
Interaction between species
Birds within their natural habitat
Backlit and rim-lit subjects
Raptors and larger birds
Smaller woodland species
Waterbirds
River-associated species
Seasonal migrants

During our first workshop, approximately 150 bird species were recorded across the different habitats visited.

Species numbers and photographic opportunities will always depend on the season, weather, habitat condition, water availability, bird movement and natural behaviour.

No specific species, sighting or photographic result can be guaranteed.

Nature has never been particularly interested in following a brochure.

Suggested Workshop Programme

The workshop programme balances field photography, image review, practical teaching and informal mentoring.

The exact structure may change according to weather, bird activity, habitat, gate logistics and the most useful photographic opportunities available at the time.

Day 1: Arrival and Introduction

Participants arrive at the workshop accommodation, settle in and join a welcome and introductory session.

The first session may include:

Discussing individual workshop goals
Reviewing camera bodies and lenses
Checking important camera settings
Assessing participant experience levels
Introducing the workshop approach
A local bird photography session where practical

This allows us to identify and correct obvious camera-setting problems before entering Kruger.

That is generally preferable to discovering them shortly after the bird has flown away. Birds can be inconsiderate that way.

Days 2 to 4: Kruger Field Sessions and Practical Learning

The main workshop period includes:

Two half-day sessions in Kruger National Park
One full-day session in Kruger National Park
Local bird photography sessions where practical
Image review
Camera technique discussions
Lightroom and editing guidance
Bird behaviour and identification discussions
Continued personal mentoring

The Kruger routes may include suitable rivers, dams, bridges, woodland, camps, open areas and seasonal birding locations.

The aim is not to travel as far as possible or collect the longest species list.

The focus is on using the available light and photographic opportunities properly, spending time with suitable subjects and learning from the conditions encountered.

Day 5: Review and Departure

The final day may include a short local photography session, image review, discussion or workshop wrap-up, depending on departure arrangements.

Participants will have an opportunity to ask final questions, reflect on what they have learned and prepare for the post-workshop image feedback process.

During the workshop, participants may work on:

Birds in Flight

Learn how shutter speed, autofocus tracking, subject acquisition and background choice influence birds-in-flight photography.

Perched Bird Portraits

Work with light, head angle, eye contact, background separation and composition to create stronger portraits.

Birds in Habitat

Move beyond close record photographs by using the surrounding environment to tell a broader story about the bird and where it lives.

Behaviour and Interaction

Learn to recognise feeding, territorial, courtship and social behaviour that may lead to more interesting photographic opportunities.

Light and Exposure

Work with bright skies, backlighting, side lighting, shadows and rapidly changing Lowveld conditions.

Fieldcraft

Image Review and Post-Workshop Feedback

Participants will be encouraged to select approximately 25 of their strongest images from the workshop.

A post-workshop online feedback session will then be arranged using Microsoft Teams, Zoom or another agreed platform.

This gives participants time to review and edit their images properly before receiving structured feedback.

It also allows a little distance from the early excitement of deciding that every photograph viewed on the back of the camera is definitely sharp.

Ethical Bird Photography

Responsible fieldcraft forms an important part of the workshop.

Participants are encouraged to photograph birds without causing unnecessary stress or disturbance.

The workshop approach includes:

Remaining quiet and patient
Avoiding repeated disturbance
Respecting nesting and breeding behaviour
Avoiding pressure on vulnerable subjects
Positioning vehicles responsibly
Allowing birds to behave naturally

Where will the 2027 workshop be based?

How much time will we spend in Kruger National Park?

The workshop includes two half-day sessions and one full-day session in Kruger National Park. The remaining time is used for local photography, image review, editing guidance, discussions and mentoring.

Do I need to be an experienced bird photographer?

No. The workshop is intended for amateur and intermediate photographers. Guidance is adapted to the participants’ experience levels, equipment and personal goals.

Do I need to be an expert birder?

No. Mario provides specialist birding knowledge and identification support. The workshop is suitable for photographers who are still developing their birding knowledge.

What camera equipment do I need?

A camera with a suitable telephoto lens is recommended. A detailed equipment guide will be supplied before the workshop. Equipment can also be discussed with Andrew before booking.

Will we photograph mammals and other wildlife?

Yes, when suitable photographic opportunities arise. Birds remain the main focus, and the workshop will not be structured around searching for Big Five sightings.

Is accommodation included?

Yes. Four nights’ accommodation in a private home or villa are included. The final property will depend on whether the workshop is based in White River or Marloth Park.

Are meals included?
