Leopard Sighting at Zimanga: A Goosebump Encounter
A Leopard Sighting at Zimanga can spark intense emotions. In MArch 2015 I was fortunate to be one of the first group of hide “dwellers” to enjoy an incredible moment with on of the rarley seen leopards of Zimanga. Goosebumps covered my arms when I heard, “It’s a leopard,” and my breath paused the moment she appeared. Excitement was shared in the hide with three conservation volunteers, who were working on the reserve and deserved this magical reward. The anticipation in the air was amplified by the low angle that provided a unique view of this elegant cat.
The First Glimpse
A chill was felt as her face emerged from the left side of the hide. It was a young leopard named Umhlaba, and she moved with graceful confidence. The moment felt precious. Careful, slow shutter clicks were used to maintain a calm atmosphere that put everyone at ease. It was believed that four minutes and 20 seconds spent with her seemed like an eternity of awe.

Capturing the Emotion
A Canon 7D MK II, paired with the 100-400 MK II lens, excelled in such conditions. Crystal-clear images were delivered through the specialized hide window without missing focus. Bokeh quality at F8 was admired, and the resulting portraits captured the cat’s intense gaze. Advice was offered to fellow photographers on settings and composition while I reached for a Canon 1DX with a 400 F2.8 MK II lens. Tighter frames were achieved by using a 1.4 Extender, and the depth of the leopard’s eyes was recorded in a close-up portrait.
The Gear Advantage
Images were processed using Canons Digital Photo Professional DPP 4.2, then exported for the web with Lightroom Classic. The flexibility of zoom lenses ensured that various creative ideas were tested. A range of apertures from F6.3 to F8 maintained enough subject detail. This approach helped avoid missing out on the leopard’s captivating expressions. A hush was experienced in the hide, and everyone felt privileged to witness such a special event. The emotional impact was intensified by advanced equipment and supportive backup services from Canon South Africa.
